The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking an experienced designer and/or an experienced software developer to build websites in the topic area of cancer genomics, bioinformatics and molecular oncology. The position focuses on researching and building website content and solutions for cancer research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
There are two main areas of focus and you will need to fit into at least one.
Web Designer + Themer + Animator + Compositor + Medical Illustrator Focus:
• Deliver high-level quality and creative content. Create image, animation, video, media using technical tools and design processes to support automation;
• Research user interfaces to improve the efficiency, usability, and display in compliance with project goals. Build user interfaces and compose pages from PSD/GRAFFLE to HTML/CSS. Integrate interfaces within a website application theme. Support reuse and maintenance over CSS libraries and provide browser compatibility in web solutions;
• Participate with website design changes and help to create consistencies to improve process efficiencies whenever possible. Design data integration combinations to research feature opportunities;
• Participate in and eventually help lead design reviews with project stakeholders and participate as a design liaison with the team. Interact with the user community to improve content and site designs;
• Create front-page graphics and interactive using dynamic Javascript/JQuery-based libraries or in FLEX/Flash;
• Deliver on tight timelines; and work within the team to help communicate the project delivery to its stakeholders.
Web Developer + Application Developer Focus:
• Research and enhance our sites and modules using PHP5 and DRUPAL while ensuring the highest quality after thorough testing over security, browser compatibility and software code maintainability;
• Design interactive CSS and Javascript/JQuery-based user interfaces to improve the efficiency, usability, display, and the content delivery;
• Construct data mash-ups between domain models using or building middle-tier web services to support secure, business procedures or to support creative information content using internet sources;
• Build and grow domain models and processes while working with developers and stakeholders involved in other aspects of the project to achieve a comprehensive design model over the content of the website;
• Provide technical documentation, installation guides and other material to assist users in installing, configuring and using the software or its modules. Assist with mentoring junior team members;
• Help to support all issues to support high-availability service levels to all users;
• Deliver on tight timelines and work within the team to help communicate the project delivery to its stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Web Designer + Themer + Animator + Compositor + Illustrator Focus:
• Internet/web-savvy with modern awareness on design and trends in media creation and media delivery;
• Graphical interface design experience as well as organizational and conceptual thinking and planning skills;
• Strong experience with content creation tools; must be fully competent with an image editor. Flash talent is strong asset;
• Fearless with the language of the Internet Browsers including HTTP, CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. Fluency in CSS in particular over different Internet Browser Technologies is an asset;
• Must be comfortable using web tools and command line utilities. We are using CMS/DRUPAL over LAMP. Experience with MACOSX is an asset;
• Creative content;
• Strong written and oral communication, and team working skills;
• Completion of a university undergraduate degree and must be technically adept, fast-learning, creative individual. A graduate in Computer Science, Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Cancer Genomics or Personalized Medicine; and knowledge and training in multiple areas would be an asset.
Code/Developer Focus:
• Expert fluency with the language of the internet browsers including CSS, HTML, JavaScript;
• Must be able to demonstrate graphical interface design experience as well as organizational and conceptual thinking and planning skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills and strong ability to implement changes;
• Must be a developer with strong coding experience; we use CMS/DRUPAL, so PHP knowledge is required, however strong web experience in JAVA/C#/PERL/CGI will not be ignored;
• Must be fully comfortable using SQL and interacting with MYSQL and other system tiers;
• Must be able to work with Linux in a terminal and provide relevant system configuration ability over LAMP;
• High degree for attention to detail;
• Experience includes content creation and operational tools for content creation and web development; please include all relevant tools on your CV;
• Must be a technically adept individual interested in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Cancer Genomics or Personalized Medicine; some knowledge and training in these areas would be an asset;
• Completion of a university undergraduate degree with focus on Math, Computer Science, Engineering or Life Sciences.
