Research Associate, Bioinformatics (2 positions)
Position: Research Associate, Bioinformatics
Reports To: Principal Investigator team
Salary: Commensurate with level of experience
Hours: 35 Hrs/week
Status: Permanent Full Time
We are seeking two full time bioinformatics research associates to support a large new collaborative research program at the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI) within the University Heath Network (UHN), and the Donnelly Centre at University of Toronto. The goal of the project is to utilize new genomic and functional genomic tools to identify new cancer targets and then to develop new therapies against these targets using synthetic monoclonal antibody technology. The two persons will work closely with a team of 5 principal investigators and many other research associates and post-doctoral fellows in the areas of next-generation sequencing/genomics (position 1) and functional genomics (position 2). The project involves analyzing and managing large amounts of sequence and microarray data from next-generation sequencing and from massively parallel functional genetic screens generated in house or from publically available databases. The candidates will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive bioinformatics platform for the integrative analysis of large-scale shRNA screening data, DNA , RNA/DNA sequences from next generation sequencing technologies, copy number variant (CNV), and multiple genomics and proteomics/genetic network data from internal and external sources. The candidates will also assist in the development of statistical models for integrative analysis of genomic and functional genomic data to identify novel drug targets. A strong understanding of cancer biology, signalling networks, and concepts related to creation and analysis of genetic networks is necessary. In addition, experience building genetic interaction databases in PostgreSQL, MySQL and DB2 is expected.
Responsibilities for these positions include:
• Ability to work with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams;
• Systems administration of open source bioinformatics software in a Unix/Linux environment;
• Participate in defining, development and maintenance of resources to help build the bioinformatics tools necessary for integration of genomic and functional genomic data;
• Participate and lead the development of training resources around these systems and tools to facilitate user learning.
• Design and develop novel bioinformatics platforms and backend databases;
• Automation of data analysis pipelines;
• Web-based development and cross-platform support;
• Functional analysis of genome-wide RNAi screens.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A PhD in cancer biology, computer science, computational biology, or engineering is required;
• At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience working with large-scale genome-wide data sets;
• More than 3 years experience in Bioinformatics;
• Experience in constructing and analyzing genetic networks from high-throughput screening is a definite asset;
• Strong experience in software and database programming (R, SQL, Matlab, Perl, Java, C and C++);
• In-depth knowledge of computational algorithms in Bioinformatics (mutation detection, sequence analysis, network clustering, microarray analysis);
• Strong experience in proteomics and biological network analysis;
• Experience in developing bioinformatics databases based on RDBMs;
• Experience with Unix/Linux environment;
• Experience in developing novel algorithms in Bioinformatics;
• Familiar with major bioinformatic tools and databases (Cytoscape, BLAST, GenBank, BioMart, BioGrid)
