The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a full-time Bioinformatics support: Database & Application Administrator. The OICR Cancer Genomics, and Informatics and Bio-computing groups are engaged in a number of analyses and sequence production projects that require a number of Open Source (OS) and Open Access (OA) databases to be maintained “in-house”, e.g., UCSC’s genome browser, EnsEMBL genome browser, BLAST and BLAT and many other OS tools. We currently have an opening for a support position person who will install, maintain and support these tools and databases, and keep them up-to-date within the OICR intranet. We are involved in the management of large amounts of cancer re-sequencing and characterization data produced by us, and are looking at ways to automate and supervise the analysis of many sequence analyses.

Responsibilities for this position include:

• Systems administration of open source bioinformatics software in a Unix/Linux environment;
• Building, administration, monitoring, upgrades, systems and user support of several systems, including (but not limited to): UCSC genome browser, Galaxy system, EnsEMBL browser and GenBank;
• Setting up maintenance scripts to maintain local versions of molecular biology databases;
• Lead as the facility librarian for current bioinformatics tools and database systems and resources using WIKI and modern web applications and technologies;
• Participate in defining, development and maintenance of web resources to help build the bioinformatics core facility;
• Participate and lead the development of training resources around these systems and tools to facilitate user learning.

QUALIFICATIONS
• A degree in computer science or biology with appropriate experience is required;
• Three (3) or more years of related work experience;
• Previous experience in bioinformatics core facility or laboratory;
• Expert user-level under the Unix/Linux environment is a must, Mac OSX an additional asset;
• Systems-level infrastructure design and software architecture knowledge an asset;
• User and systems operational experience an asset;
• Knowledge of scripting and languages including Java, PERL an asset;
• Knowledge of relational databases including MYSQL, POSTGRES, and Oracle an asset;
• Knowledge of content creation tools an asset;
• Further development-related experience in web and/or GUI development an asset in particular with Internet technologies and languages an asset (e.g., HTML, Javascript, AJAX, CSS, XHTML, XML, XLST, XSL);
• Team-player who works well with challenges and participates in a professional manner to support a learning culture;
• Appreciation of the medical molecular biology field of cancer genomics an asset;

OICR is a new centre of excellence in cancer research located in the MaRS Centre in the Discovery District in downtown Toronto. Launched in December 2005, OICR is an independent research institute funded by the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. OICR is addressing significant challenges in cancer research with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams. New discoveries to prevent, detect and treat cancer will be moved from the bench to practical applications in patients.
