BIOINFORMATICIAN

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is now recruiting for a Bioinformatician to work in an industry-driven research environment. The Vineland Applied Genomics Group is composed of molecular breeding, plant breeding and bioinformatics. These core research disciplines work collectively to derive genomics and genetics based solutions to industry priorities. We require a creative and experienced bioinformatician to participate in the development of innovative software solutions to biological problems. The successful candidate will participate as a member of the Applied Genomics Group and will work within the bioinformatics research program.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

  • Be supervised by and report to the Bioinformatics Research Scientist
  • Perform bioinformatics analyses on data generated by Vineland research programs
  • Develop desktop and web-based software solutions to process and visualize biological data
  • Administrate bioinformatics computing infrastructure at Vineland
  • Identify existing software solutions to research needs and adapt them to the Vineland program
  • Supervise technicians and students within the Bioinformatics group
  • Periodically execute or supervise molecular biology research

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • BSc in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or Biochemistry/Biology
  • Experience performing common bioinformatics tasks such as using BLAST, sequence assembly, sequence annotation
  • Experience analyzing ‘next-generation’ sequencing data (Roche, Illumina, ABI)
  • Extensive programming experience with one of the following languages; Java, C#, or C++
  • Experience with a ‘scripting’ language such as Perl, Python or Ruby
  • Experience developing within a Linux environment
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to balance multiple work assignments
  • Experience managing staff

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Understanding of molecular biology concepts
  • Experience working with plant species
  • Knowledge of statistics
  • Knowledge of genetics
