The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Java Programmer to assist with the development of an integrated and highly performing information management system for the Ontario Health Study (OHS) study. OHS aims to collect epidemiological data and bio-samples on 150.000 participants and is creating a platform to launch studies that advance the understanding of the etiology, prevention, biology, and early detection of cancer and other chronic diseases, ultimately leading to health improvements for all Ontarians. OHS is part of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow project, funded by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC). It consists of a network of five similar studies across Canada that will enroll 300,000 participants and for which the information management system has to be developed.
The responsibilities include:
• Development of the framework and components of applications or systems as directed by the development team lead;
• Large scale, complex program software;
• Ensuring complete unit testing is complete and the system is programmed and performs to the project standard;
• Assisting with performance risk assessment for applications and systems;
• Coordination with business analyst to determine and verify requirements and specifications;
• Pinpointing strengths and weaknesses of various design alternatives and selection or recommendation of appropriate solutions;
• Provision of practical solutions based on industry best practices to a wide range of complex problems.
QUALIFICATIONS
• An undergraduate degree/diploma in computer information technology or equivalent experience;
• Four years or more experience working in a systems development role within an Information Technology Department;
• Proficiency in programming and information management applications development (full life cycle) using Java technologies and open source Web frameworks (Wicket, Spring, Web services, Tomcat, Maven, etc.);
• Work experience in different system environments (e.g., UNIX, Linux, Windows), demonstrating fundamental understanding of information system development for research end-use purposes;
• Expert knowledge of object-oriented software development techniques;
• Expert Knowledge of relational database development techniques (MySql, Hibernate);
• Expert knowledge of Unified Modeling Language;
• Experience supporting critical business applications in a production environment;
• Ability to perform standard application unit testing and debugging.
OICR is an innovative new cancer research institute located in the MaRS Centre in the Discovery District in downtown Toronto.
