The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow or a Scientific Associate to develop a comprehensive and innovative viral bioinformatics platform to systematically identify both exogenous and endogenous viral sequences in new cancer genome datasets and to assess their functional role in carcinogenesis. Results obtained from bioinformatics, together with further experimental investigations, aims to lead to the identification of new viruses as causative agents in human cancer. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Vincent Ferretti, OICR principal investigator and senior scientist in bioinformatics.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
• Ph D in computational biology, mathematics, computer sciences or molecular biology;
• Good knowledge of biological sequence algorithmic and analysis tools;
• Strong experience in software and database programming (Java, Perl, SQL);
• Experience in working with large scale genomic datasets such as those produced by next generation sequencing technologies;
• Strong knowledge of molecular biology. Knowledge of molecular virology is an asset.
The successful candidate will enjoy access to cutting-edge IT infrastructure such as a 1.2 petabyte storage system and a compute farm of 1,500 processor cores, the well-funded and intellectually stimulating environment of OICR's genomic and bioinformatics platforms, opportunity to drive projects and publish in scientific journals, and attend scientific meetings.
OICR is a new centre of excellence in cancer research located in the MaRS Centre in the Discovery District in downtown Toronto. Launched in December 2005, OICR is an independent research institute funded by the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. OICR is addressing significant challenges in cancer research with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams. New discoveries to prevent, detect and treat cancer will be moved from the bench to practical applications in patients.
