Job Description:

Institution/Company: Ontario Cancer Institute
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Job Description: Scientific Associate

We are seeking a full time scientific associate in systems biology to join our multi-disciplinary team. We focus on translational research linking integrative computational biology with high-throughput biology, with the goal to translate basic research into clinical applications. The emphasis is on relating cancer development and progression in order to identify molecular pathways responsible for affecting patient diagnosis and response to treatment. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on projects involving various cancer types, primary tumor samples and models, and will apply data mining methods to integrative analysis of genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic high-throughput data related to cancer research.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will develop and apply data mining methods and tools in an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative environment. The work will require comprehensive integration and annotation of results, design of project databases, identification of prioritization of hypotheses for validation and new experiments, and systems modeling using protein-protein interaction and pathway data.

ENVIRONMENT
The candidate will be joining Jurisica lab (http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~juris), and work closely with multiple collaborators on NIH/CIHR/ORF-funded projects related to both basic science as well as clinically related questions.

Our current computing infrastructure includes four large IBM pSeries servers and a large Linux cluster. Commercial middleware and systems developed in-house in addition to open source application run in AIX and Linux environments.

QUALIFICATIONS
• A PhD degree in computer science, physics, engineering, mathematics, or computational biology is required.
• Understanding of biological data is required.
• Previous experience in bioinformatics is necessary (high-throughput datasets, network analysis, image analysis, or sequence analyses).
• Experience with relational databases, Java, C, R, Matlab, Unix/Linux is desirable.
• Multi-CPU, multi-core, and GPU programming experience is a strong asset.
