Metabolite Set Enrichment Analysis (MSEA) performs enrichment analyses for (primarily human) metabolomic studies. It identifies patterns of metabolite concentration changes in a biologically meaningful context. MSEA uses a library of ~6300 predefined metabolite sets from pathways, disease signatures, genetic traits, and cellular/tissue locations. MSEA also facilitates conversion between metabolite common names, synonyms and other database identifies.

MSEA accepts three types of data inputs:

  1. a list of significant metabolite names;

  2. a measured biofluid sample (metabolite names plus concentrations);

  3. a concentration table (multiple samples from a metabolomic study)

The outputs from the analyses include a graphic summary of the enrichment analysis, a detailed table containing all the significant metabolite sets and their enrichment scores, p values, etc. Users can click each metabolite set name to obtain more detailed background information and their original publications (if available).
