CBW Awards

For the 2012 workshop season, the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops is again pleased to offer award opportunities to eligible participants. The CBW recognizes the need to gain advanced training in bioinformatics and advance research, and has secured award funding to make this possible. Two funding options are available to eligible applicants:
1) $5,000 in registration awards is available for the 2012 workshops.
2) Further funding from Mitacs is available for Mitacs Travel awards for workshops between May 2012-September 2012.

Interested participants should review the eligibility criteria provided below and complete the application process. The CBW registration award will cover the registration fee for the participant's workshop (2-day workshop: $500 + HST or 5-day workshop: $950 + HST). The Mitacs Travel award will cover up to $750 lowest economy fare travel, $150/night hotel and $25 per day for meals to attend a workshop.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a graduate student, post-doctoral fellow or clinical fellow
- Must be attending a Canadian university, college, teaching hospital or not-for profit research institution
- Must have completed an application for a 2012 CBW workshop
- Have not received a CBW award to attend a workshop in 2012
- Must not be applying for 1-Day workshops
- Only one award to be granted per person
- Separate applications must be received for the CBW Registration Award and the Mitacs Travel Award

Deadline
Applications for awards must be received one month prior to the start date of the workshop. The same deadline for online application to the workshop is used, so please refer to each workshops information page.

CBW Registration Award Application Requirements:
1) A completed application for a 2012 CBW workshop

2) A full resume (5 page maximum). Resumes may be submitted online with the application, or in Word or PDF format to course_info@bioinformatics.ca

3) A letter of reference from your immediate supervisor stating:

  • Applicant name and status or position
  • Workshop being applied for
  • Impact of workshop on applicant's career development
  • Relevance of workshop to applicant's research project

Letters of reference must be sent directly from the referee to course_info@bioinformatics.ca. The same letter of reference may be used as for the application as long as all of the above content is addressed in the letter.

4) A 750 word proposal (Times New Roman, 12pt Font) that includes the following information:

  • Name and status or position
  • Workshop being applied for
  • A lay description of your research project
  • How attendance in the stated workshop will benefit both the project and your skills
  • How the skills gained in the workshop will benefit your career


Mitacs Travel Award Application Requirements:
1) A completed application for a 2012 CBW workshop.

2) A letter of reference from your immediate supervisor stating:

  • Applicant name and status or position
  • Workshop being applied for
  • Impact of workshop on applicant's career development
  • Relevance of workshop to applicant's research project

Letters of reference must be sent directly from the referee to course_info@bioinformatics.ca. The same letter of reference may be used as for the application as long as all of the above content is addressed in the letter.

Submission Details:
Award applications must be complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Separate applications must be received for the CBW Registration Award and the Mitacs Travel Award

Submit complete applications in Word or PDF format to course_info@bioinformatics.ca. In the subject line state: CBW Registration Award Application or Mitacs Travel Award Application.

Review Process:
Award applications will be reviewed by an appointed Award Review Committee. The Committee will review all complete applications received for each workshop in 2012 and will inform only successful applicants by email approximately one month prior to the workshop start date.

The CBW Registration Award will be used against the workshop registration fee.

The Mitacs Travel Award will be distributed following the workshop and upon receipt of all travel stubs and travel related receipts.
